In and around the Dunnet area there is plenty to do for all ages.

The renown beach with sand dunes - some 2 miles long - rarely has more than a handful of people on it, except during hot summer days, so it s unlikely that you could want for more area of beach per head anywhere in the UK. It is a wonderful beach for children to play in, surfers, sand yachting, etc. or simply to watch the sun as it sinks down in the evening.

Also close by is Dunnet Forest with well trodden paths and professionally maintained trails, it is a great place for a meandering walk and is frequented by dog walkers from miles around. Children love the forest for it s many hidey-holes and it s abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna.

Dunnet Sands & Bay at Dusk

However if you want breathtaking then walk or drive up to Dunnet Head - the most northerly point on the UK mainland. There are superb views out over the wild waters of the Pentland Firth, and a plethora of bird life. On a clear day you will have a fine view of the Old Man of Hoy on the Orkney Islands. A word of warning however, there s usually a stiff headland breeze so hold on to your hat!

For the avid fly fisherman, St. John's Loch is just a short distance from the Hotel and boasts superb trout fishing. It is open from April 1st to September 30th.

In 1990 Mary-Ann Calder moved from her life-long home at Westside Croft, Dunnet, to a Wick nursing-home.

When the time came for Mary-Ann to leave, because of its historic nature, she sought to have the croft preserved as it was, and so the Caithness Heritage Trust was formed to acquire it and carry out her wishes.

This unique look into the crofting past, which was a way of life for many in Caithness, provides an rare insight which would be difficult to find elsewhere.
